Emotion-focused Family Therapy teaches parents how to communicate effectively with their child, especially if there are mental health issues, alcohol and drug abuse, or behavioral challenges. The goal of therapy is for the parent to assist the child in learning how to cope with their emotions in a healthy manner rather than using unhealthy behaviors to cope. Emotion-focused Family Therapy (EFFT) improves communication between family members, which fosters honesty, authenticity, and care between members.
EFFT can also be used on individuals and in intimate partner relationships. Ultimately, EFFT helps an individual learn to cope with intense feelings rather than using maladaptive behaviors to cope or suppressing their emotions. Many of the counsellors at Abbotsford Valley Counselling are formally trained in EFFT.
