Families can care deeply about each other and still get stuck in painful patterns. A child might act out, parents may feel unheard, and partners might start to pull away. At Abbotsford Valley Counselling, we provide Emotion-Focused Family Therapy in Abbotsford to help family members understand what is happening beneath conflict and build safer, more connected relationships.

Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, also called EFFT, looks at emotions and relationships together. Instead of focusing only on the argument in front of us, we explore the feelings and needs underneath it. Fear, hurt, shame, loneliness, or the wish to feel valued can all shape how people respond. Once these patterns become clearer, families can begin to communicate in a different way.

When family counselling may help

  • Ongoing family conflict or repeated arguments
  • Parenting challenges and behavioural concerns
  • Feeling distant, unheard, or misunderstood at home
  • Changes that place pressure on family relationships
  • Difficulty talking about strong emotions in a safe way

Our approach is collaborative. We do not decide who is right or wrong. We create space for each person to be heard and understood. Depending on the needs of the family, we may also draw from attachment theory, CBT, DBT, narrative practice, mindfulness, or other evidence-based approaches.

We provide family counselling services in Abbotsford from our office or secure phone or video counselling may also be available when an in-person visit is difficult. We support families from across the Fraser Valley. Our clinicians work with children aged 6 and up, teens, adults, couples, and families.

If your family keeps experiencing the same challenges and nothing seems to change, you do not have to work it out alone. Call 604-260-6596 to talk with our team about Emotion-focused Family Therapy and find a counsellor who fits your family’s needs.
