Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of therapy that sees our mind as made up of different “parts,” like inner voices or roles we take on. These parts may try to protect us or hold pain from past experiences. At the center is the “Self,” which is calm, wise, and able to help heal and guide the parts. IFS helps people get to know their parts and work with them in a caring way, even those that seem destructive or unwanted.
Instead of suppressing or fighting against inner conflict, IFS encourages curiosity and connection, which leads to long-term integration and peace. It empowers individuals to become their own healers by accessing their Self’s guidance. This approach can be especially effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, and relational issues. Many of the therapists at Abbotsford Valley Counselling are trained in IFS.
